Rankings of Indian Universities-a growing concern...
Many eyebrows were raised when Times Higher Education recently released the World University Rankings 2020. The reason being that none of the indian universities figures in top of the list. Premier institutes like Indian Institute of Science, Bengaluru ( IISc) and Indian Institute of Technology ( IIT) are getting their places abysmally low in the rankings i.e between 301-400.
As usual Oxford tops the list followed by Stanford and Harvard of the USA. The results as published indeed appear shocking. While a few other debutante indian universities qualified in the rankings somewhere in the range between 690+ the downfall of top universities in the ranking is a matter of concern for all in the fields of Education.
Those who are already in the business of education have started giving opinions which differ in thoughts and magnitude. But one common factor that raises its head is the lack of originality in publications by the faculties of the top Indian institutions especially the IISc and IITs. A genuine research often takes years of penance. It calls for infrastructure, related facilities, flush of funds and overall immense patience. In a fast moving world the indian scientists falter in their efforts while mad rush continues unabated. As a result the originality often takes a back seat and the publications are mostly stale having been copied from western universities. The top indian institutes have apparently lost their shine. A mad rush for entry into these institutes does not guarantee any quality enhancement. A kind of complacency has gripped the indian education system which have started getting stymied. I know a section of so called hitherto top indian institutes may question my mind. But it is for those at the helm need to find an answer.
It is well established that ‘ Research and development’ remains in the realm of scientific community whereby new inventions are made. The students who pursue science work on these developments and work further in order to open up new vistas. Weird it may appear the top indian institutes, the faculties they boast of, have failed to produce that impetus.
India which once was the temple of education needs to gain back those heights especially in fields of Research and other technical arena. Surely, a nation full of talent can work harder in that direction. We cannot as a nation lose our focus.
There are other inherent reasons behind the falling graph. The education system in the country has taken a back seat in the past two decades.
