A HUMBLE TRIBUTE TO THE LEGEND:ISHWARCHANDRA VIDYASAGAR ON HIS 123rd BIRTH ANNIVERSARY*

Widow or the widowhood is a painful word-a word that changes the entire thought process of a woman. We all know and are aware that in a country where women are worshipped as GOD during Dussehra and many other festivals, are not treated at par with menfolk. There is this dichotomy which has been prevailing since ages. The  rituals like removal of vermillion, footwear, ornaments from a woman who has just lost her husband are derogatory especially when this happens with a relatively younger woman. The male dominated chauvinistic society has tolerated, if not encouraged, these rituals with eyes closed. These had to go and am happy the Maharashtra Government in the year 2021 had woken up from slumber and banned such rituals. Going back century, an incident that had happened in 1853 in presence of Ishwarchandra Vidyasagar changed the entire socio economic melee. He was attending a function at zamindar’s place and was served a sumptuous lunch. As he got up to wash his hands, a nine year ol...

MAHATMA PHULE -A HUMBLE TRIBUTE

Jyotirao Govindrao Phule, popularly called Jyotiba Phule, was born on  11th April 1827 nearly 196 years ago. He breathed his last on 29th of November 1890. Born to a ordinary vegetable vendor, the boy grew up and got educated at Scottish  Missions School, poona. Living in a society, then, torn and stricken by caste based dogmas, Jyotiba fought all his life for equality as he believed God made all equal-he believed that a man, who cannot choose his parents, cannot be discriminated against based on his color, caste or creed. A great thinker that he was, he in those times, thought of women's education in India for he believed a society where women are liberalised can break free from all shackles and thereby progress. It is amazing as to how in those days, when people’s movements were limited, where society was stricken by dogmas, jyotiba could think  of welfare of all especially the downtrodden and dreamt of an inclusive society.  Jyotiba's contribution in the field of ...

A SIGNIFICANT JUDGMENT

Amidst various news ranging from Southwest monsoon ravaging the plains of central India to the recent flash flood due to sudden cloudburst in Amarnath leading to loss of human lives, to the raging controversy regarding the alleged ferocious nature of lions depicting the Ashok Chakra atop the new Parliament Building,     the passing of Supreme Court decision on the necessity of framing of new laws envisaging grant of bail to those arrested may have eluded notice of a casual reader. A bench of the Hon’ble Supreme court comprising Justices Sanjay Kaul and M. M. Sundresh in its recent judgment expressed its anguish over the number of undertrials languishing in various jails of the country. The significant part of the judgment dealt with the fact that what is worrisome and crowding the jails is arrests made by authorities, mainly Police, quite often than not    with caution thrown to the    wind. The Hon’ble judges, deliberating on various aspects, observ...

The infamous Saki-Naka incidence-a national shame…

Yess..this time it happened in Mumbai-‘Mumbai meri jaan’. Mumbai-a city that does not sleep; a city that manifests humanity; Mumbai, a city that has seen upheavals which perhaps no other metropolis has ever seen; a city which crawled back to normalcy     in no time whether it was the infamous serial blasts in 1993 or that mindless mayhem on 26 /11; a city where women never ever thought about their security while stepping out of homes, has fallen to disgrace last Friday at Saki Naka. The rape, brutalisation and murder of 32 yrs old woman, a mother of two, has shaken the conscience of     entire city and the country once again. The horrifying act reminds the dastardly Nirbhaya incidence of December 2013. The Saki Naka incident has shamed the nation once again. At a time when the Government’s *’beti bachao’* initiative has taken momentum, incidence such as this again puts a spoke in the endeavour. It is a matter of concern that despite stricter laws being enforce...

A Glorious Tribute to Lt Nikita Dhaundiyal

While this country is proud witness to thousands of men joining the defence forces after someone near lost his life fighting enemies, It is not common to see spouse of the slain take up the cudgel soon after losing her partner..not only Madam Nikita Dhoundiyal, wife of slain Major Vibhuti Shankar Dhoundiyal, decided to join the Army herself soon after losing her husband she also pledged    her entire life in service of Army. To achieve her goals she not only had to burn midnight oil studying hard for the Short Service examination but also undergo the gruelling training and overcome other obstacles. I am shorn of words as to how tributes can be paid to such valour and courage shown by Ms Nikita. All i can say that a country which has produced a daughter like her cannot be trampled.  History is replete with examples that only a Jijabai can produce a warrior like Shivaji; a Rani Laxmi Bai of Jhansi who fought the first war of independence against the mighty British in 1857. ...

Get well soon Kapil-the nation needs you...

It was a lazy Thursday afternoon . In the Pandemic situation people across the country were busy celebrating Mahasaptami in a stymied way that the news of arguably India’s greatest cricketer Kapil Dev Nikhanj suffering a heart attack trickled in. The first reaction of one and all was an initial disbelief - “aisa ho nahi sakta”. It is said that cricket is not a mere sport in India-it is a religion-a religion where there is no divide. People cutting across all religion, caste, creed or other divides enjoy Indian cricket and stand in unison while supporting the sport . The Indians also believe that Sachin Tendulkar, arguably the greatest batsman the world has witnessed since the legendary Don Bradman, is its GOD. But much before Sachin Tendulkar entered the cricketing arena a young lad, hardly 18 years of age, hailing from Haryana, strongly built with dreams in his eyes , with heart of a lion, took the country by storm. Such was his talent Kapil was drafted    straight into...
